Description
Toikka fans, rejoice; Suomen lasiumuseo (The Finnish Glass Museum) has released Oivan Ihmemaasa (In Oiva's Wonderland), the latest book about the legendary Oiva Toikka. In Finnish and English texts, the book lists 261 birds and other memorable works from Toikka's 1972-2019 glass career. It also delves deeper in Toikka's lesser known work with ceramics and even set design for the Finnish National Opera. Readers will also learn how Oiva Toikka went from an art professor in Lapland, Finland, to world-renowned, award-winner designer. The world of art and design suffered a great loss with Toikka's passing in 2019, and this book is a beautiful way for fans and collectors to commemorate his timeless contributions. Packed with information and color images, it makes a wonderful gift for a friend or addition to your own library or coffee table; just as Toikka's designs are, it is sure to be a conversation piece.

A well written overview of the life work of Oiva Toikka.

This is a high -production value paperback book. The color and paper quality is first rate.
The sampling of Oiva Toikka's work is well done. It provides an overview from his earliest works right up to his passing in 2019.
It provides some insights to his thinking and originality. An emphasis is placed on how well Oiva worked with contemporaries and his preference in collaborating with the highly esteemed professional Nuutajarvi glass blowers.
Examples of his design work are well selected but not comprehensive due to his
extremely high productivity.
I look at this book often with both pleasure and some sadness. However, it does help me value my modest collection even more than in the past.
A worthwhile book to own and read over and over again.

Informative

An interesting read about Oiva Toikka's career that goes beyond the scope of the birds. The beautiful photography includes many other of his glassworks along with an annotated list of hundreds of the birds. The front and back covers of the book are folded so that they may handily be used as bookmarkers.

Update your references.

This updated reference source for Toikka designs (birds, cubes, vases, sculptures and theater pieces) fulfills a need, long anticipated by collectors and fans of “all things Oiva”. The catalog birds are up to date, though the special and commissioned birds are not included. Nevertheless, this publication will please you with quality pictures and rich colors.
