The real Curlew is a large wading bird, found in estuaries and coastal meadows. Its coloring is a mottled brown, which darkens near the tail. Toikka’s rendition takes these basic characteristics and imbues them with visionary splendor. His bird features a beautiful marbling pattern in tones of teal, brown and white upon a smoky glass body. The body is large and robust, while the head is held high as if appraising all that surrounds it. Its curved beak also contributes to his haughty air.
