More about iittala Toikka Alaska Loon – 2009 FinnFest Bird Toikka’s Alaska Loon is a whimsical reimagining of the North American waterbird created specifically for FinnFest 2009. Its lovely white body is speckled with air bubbles and light brownish markings, which give the illusion of plumage. This effect is the result of a serendipitous event at the Nuutajärvi glass factory in which workers discovered that dirt left in the molds produced tracery-like markings on the glass. Toikka, seeing the potential in these markings, decided to incorporate this supposed “defect” into his designs.
The Alaska Loon is beautiful not only in detail but also in shape; its long, graceful neck rises effortlessly from its tear-shaped body. The vivid yellow head and metallic beak are wonderful counterpoints to the otherwise monotone bird.
The Alaska Loon is a limited edition Toikka creation, with only 500 in production, so make one yours before they are gone forever.
