Workers noticed that dirt from molds was leaving these strange marking on the glass. Toikka, seeing opportunity in this mistake, decided to take advantage. Dirt was placed in spikey molds and then the glass was blown into the mold. The spikey mold produced air bubbles in the glass and when the piece was removed from the mold, the dirt would spread across the bubbles.
