Birds by Toikka land in New YorkThe 30th anniversary of Birds by Toikka culminates in New York. Bloomingdale's flagship department store in Manhattan has decided to dedicate its impressive glass-walled gallery to Toikka's glass art from the beginning of November onwards – during the most hectic days of the Christmas season. All of the birthday birds that are currently being sold will be on display, of course, along with other artworks by Toikka. He has resurrected some of the earliest, discontinued birds for the occasion: a new numbered series of these avians will be produced. His admirers can meet him in person at the store during one weekend.
This celebration of Finnish glass will continue next year as well. Urban Glass, a glass centre in New York, has invited Toikka to head a glass workshop in the early spring. Before that, the glass centre's gallery will present an overview of Finnish glass, starting in midwinter. In summer 2003, Urban Glass will offer its American students an opportunity to participate in two separate glass workshops in Nuutajärvi, on premises rented by the Tavastia Training Centre from Nuutajärven Lasi.
